Miriam's Fund A Cure Goal = $10,000.00

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type one diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. JDRF New Mexico Chapter supports 1,600+ T1D families statewide. The One Night Gala, driven by volunteer leadership, will raise more than $380,000 for life-saving research.

T1D is something that impacts my life each and every day. Growing up with my father who is type 1, I was familiar with the struggle to keep your blood sugars balanced and the fear that comes with calling 911 when low blood sugar levels cause seizures and unresponsiveness. One day me and my brother asked if we could check our blood sugar. That’s how I found out that I am type 1 too. I was 10 years old.

Not too long after I was diagnosed, I was having breakfast and suddenly fell to the floor in a seizure due to low blood sugars. Hypoglycemia is a reality for diabetics and is something we face regularly. It comes with low blood sugars and terrible insulin reactions.

I was always told I couldn’t have children as a kid because maintaining blood sugar levels is tricky and complications during pregnancy can occur. After working diligently with my doctor- even being told by one doctor that I should just adopt- my husband and I were blessed with two wonderful children, Hannah and Matthew.

Being diabetic is a daily struggle. Some days are not great and others I feel awesome. Overall, I wouldn’t be me if I wasn’t type 1. It has shaped me to be the person I am today.

JDRF exists for the millions of children, adults, and families affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D) every single day. Their determination to overcome this disease strengthens ours to end it by funding life-changing T1D research.

T1D is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas loses the ability to produce insulin — a hormone essential to turning food into energy. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet and lifestyle. It requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin.

Your participation in JDRF events ensures that JDRF can continue funding critical T1D research. With your support, this research will continue to bring us closer to a world without T1D.
